Beyond the Change: Re‑Engaging, Rebuilding & Moving Forward

Back to Resource Hub

VMA Group recently hosted a workshop for change communications professionals to discuss and share best practices around engaging dispersed teams post-change. Here are our key takeaways from the session.

“The diversity of industries made this a high impact session full of shared lessons, smarter approaches and practical tools. For comms leads working alone on projects, collaborative sessions like this one offer essential validation and fresh thinking.”

Julie Mazzei, Account Director, VMA Group

Organisational change whether structural, technological or cultural has become a consistent reality. While much attention is placed on delivering the change itself, the period after implementation is just as critical. The level of post‑change engagement will determine whether your colleagues feel informed, supported and connected, and ultimately whether your organisation  will regain stability and high performance

Effective engagement relies on four core principles: transparency, respect, thoughtful planning and human-centred communication.

1. Transparency

Transparency is essential for rebuilding confidence. Employees need clarity around what decisions have been made, what is still evolving and how it affects them. This means communicating updates regularly, acknowledging when details may change and ensuring colleagues always know where to find the latest information. Being open about what is known, and what is not yet final, helps reduce speculation and reinforces trust during periods of uncertainty.

2. Respect

Change impacts people on both practical and personal levels. It can shift responsibilities, disrupt long‑standing relationships and create emotional strain. Demonstrating respect means recognising these realities, tailoring communication to different audiences and allowing time for people to process what is happening. Creating space for two-way conversations, listening to concerns and responding with empathy will ensure your colleagues feel heard and supported throughout the transition.

3. Planning and Timing

Strong post-change engagement begins with clear planning. This includes defining what success looks like, outlining expected behavioural shifts and ensuring alignment across leadership. Identifying any learning and development needs early is critical, whether through training materials, toolkits or managerial support. Thoughtful timing also matters; coordinated communication reduces overload and gives your colleagues space to absorb information, ask questions and adapt at a manageable pace.

4. Delivering Significant News In Person

Although digital tools provide reach and efficiency, important messages should be delivered face-to-face wherever possible. In-person communication not only builds trust, but enables real-time questions and provides clarity during potentially sensitive moments. Managers must be equipped with accurate, consistent information to cascade across teams, with feedback captured and shared with leadership to close the loop and show it is being taken seriously.

The Path Forward

Post-change engagement is more than a communication activity; it’s a strategic, human focused process that shapes how effectively your organisation will move forward after disruption. By prioritising openness, empathy, careful planning and meaningful interaction, you will strengthen trust and create a foundation for long term resilience.
