Working in recruitment for the communications industry, I have met thousands of incredible women who work in PR. In the earlier stages of my career, I encountered young, ambitious women eager to develop their experience and contacts. Now, at 45 and with over 17 years in communications recruitment, I reflect on the many women who have left the PR industry. Often, the balance of work and personal commitments becomes too challenging or expensive to manage. Additionally, the lack of women in senior positions can be discouraging. When Women in PR approached me to support their 45 over 45 initiative, I eagerly joined their judging panel and participated in a debate on why many women leave the industry and how we can help combat this in the future.
Key Issues Affecting Women in PR
Role Models
We seek our future selves reflected in others. It’s crucial to have role models who understand the challenges of a career journey as a woman, providing inspiration and guidance.
Impact of Covid-19
The pandemic has significantly affected everyone, but data shows women have been more deeply impacted. This period of reflection has led to The Great Resignation, as people reassess their priorities and values.
Recruitment Practices
While technology has advanced recruitment practices, it can also be challenging for candidates. There’s a risk of being excluded based on CV dates and experience gaps. Recruitment should focus on understanding the individual’s story beyond just words on a page.
Feeling Visible
Life doesn’t end at 40, but societal norms can make women feel otherwise. The women before us fought for rights we now enjoy. It’s our responsibility to ensure future generations see what they can achieve and continue to drive change.
Leading the Story of Positive Change
Gender equality is not just another box to tick. Women in PR, Noon’s Elinor Mills, and LinkedIn VMA GROUP are at the forefront of celebrating those who lead the story of positive change in PR.
