How to Prepare for a Job Interview?

You’ve crafted the perfect CV, applied for your dream job, and finally received an interview invitation. What’s next? In today’s competitive communications and marketing recruitment landscape, it’s crucial to make a strong impression. Whether your interview is via Zoom, in-person, or a hybrid, preparation is key. Our recruiters have put together a guide to help you prepare for your interview and secure your dream job in communications, marketing, or PR.

Research the Company

Whether your interview is in-person or online, conducting thorough research on the organization is essential. Start with the company’s website to understand their ethos and corporate values, which will give you insight into their culture. It’s also beneficial to browse the company’s social media profiles to gauge their tone of voice and communication style.

Visit their news pages to see the latest press coverage, which can serve as a good conversation starter. If possible, learn more about the team using LinkedIn—knowing you have things in common can be encouraging.

Be Punctual

The adage “On time is late” holds true, so allow plenty of time to arrive if your interview is in-person. Double-check the address, especially if it’s in a co-working space. For virtual interviews, ensure you’re online a few minutes early, including checking your technical setup. Make sure your microphone and camera are working, and that you have a stable connection with minimal background noise.

If you need any assistance or accessibility software, inform your consultant or interviewer in advance. Having a backup device, like a fully charged smartphone, can also provide peace of mind.

Dress to Impress

First impressions last, so dress smartly in business attire, ensuring comfort. Even for online interviews, maintain the same level of formality as you would in-person. This not only leaves a lasting impression but also boosts your confidence.

Mind Your Body Language and Surroundings

Positive body language is crucial, especially in virtual interviews. Avoid slouching, fiddling, or looking away from the screen. Keep your eyes on the interviewer to simulate eye contact. Inform those you live with about your interview to prevent interruptions, and ensure your background is tidy or neutral to avoid unconscious biases. Good lighting is also important to present yourself well.

Know Your CV

Your CV is the interviewer’s guide, so answer questions competently and thoroughly. Prepare examples of past professional experiences that highlight your skills. The STAR method can help structure your responses, ensuring you provide specific details and concrete evidence.

Situation: Describe the specific situation. Task: What was required of you? Action: Describe your actions, focusing on your contributions. Results: What was the outcome? Quantify your results where possible.

Be Inquisitive

At the end of your interview, ask questions to show genuine interest in the position and company. Prepare three to five questions, as some may be covered during the interview. This also helps you assess if the organization is the right fit for you.

Acknowledge Your Weaknesses

Be honest about your weaknesses, but focus on positive outcomes. Traits like impatience or being overly critical can be reframed positively. Be mindful of how questions are framed, such as recalling a failure and how you handled it. Stay calm, and remember that practice makes perfect.
