Post-COP26: Where Next for Clean Energy Conversations?

Back to Resource Hub

On November 24th, VMA GROUP hosted an insightful event titled “Life post COP26 and the clean energy transition.” This gathering brought together communication leaders from prominent energy companies to discuss the aftermath of COP26 and the role of communications in advancing the clean energy agenda. The event focused on the challenges and opportunities for communicators in the energy sector, especially in light of the commitments made in “The Glasgow Climate Pact.”

Key Themes and Challenges in Energy Communication

The transition towards cleaner energy was a central theme at COP26, with significant commitments made to reduce emissions and decrease coal usage. However, one of the main challenges for communicators in the energy sector is conveying complex messages in a world often dominated by oversimplified narratives. While affordability remains a primary concern for consumers, there is a growing awareness of the environmental impact of energy use. Communicators must find ways to educate consumers about renewable energy sources and address safety concerns surrounding nuclear energy.

Opportunities for Communication Practitioners

This evolving landscape presents opportunities for communication practitioners to play a pivotal role in promoting cleaner energy. The media’s increasing focus on climate change, with dedicated environmental editors, reflects a shift towards acknowledging its inevitability. However, this also introduces new challenges, particularly for those in the renewable energy sector, such as offshore wind. Gaining government support and public trust is crucial, yet the media often scrutinizes aspects like reliability and cost-effectiveness.

From a communications perspective, the key challenge is to anticipate difficult questions and provide compelling arguments to support the transition to cleaner energy. This requires a strategic approach to engage stakeholders effectively and foster a deeper understanding of the benefits and challenges of renewable energy.
