The NNC Network recently gathered for an insightful fireside chat with Inara Pilatti, Meta’s former Head of Internal Communications. This event marked another milestone for the community of Internal Communications professionals who speak English as a second language. With over 100 members from more than 30 nationalities, the network continues to grow and thrive.
Inara Pilatti’s Journey into Internal Communications
During the event, Inara Pilatti shared her unique journey into the field of Internal Communications. With an academic background in journalism and a keen interest in psychology, she began her career at HSBC in an HR position. This role provided her with a taste of the corporate world and eventually led her to a Communications role, where she could combine her love for writing, storytelling, and understanding human behavior.
Inara’s move to London was driven by a personal dream and an opportunity with her employer, Meta. She discussed the cultural differences in working life and the advantages of being multilingual in the workplace. Despite challenges like needing to check dictionaries during conversations, Inara emphasized how language is closely tied to culture, making multilingualism a valuable asset in global organizations.
Managing Imposter Syndrome
One of the key topics of the evening was Imposter Syndrome and how to manage it in the workplace. Inara shared her top tips for dealing with this common issue:
- Make peace with it: Accept that Imposter Syndrome is not going away.
- Leverage your strengths: Focus on your strengths rather than fixating on weaknesses.
- Remember your expertise: You are the expert in your field.
Inara also shared humorous anecdotes about her experiences in the UK, such as arriving late to meetings to avoid small talk about the weather. She highlighted the differences in workplace culture between Brazil and the UK, noting that there are more hugs in Brazil.
Looking Ahead
The event concluded with Inara inviting attendees to network and form a typically British queue for hugs. It was a pleasure to host Inara and welcome both new and familiar faces back to Hanover Communications for another NNC event.
