Meet the Author: In Conversation With… Fiona Passantino

Following the recent Meet the Author event, I find myself contemplating the power of visual communication in the workplace. Fiona Passantino’s guide to Post-Covid Engagement offers a fresh perspective on how we convey messages in a rapidly changing world.

What Did You Miss?

When we think about communication, words often come to mind first. However, Fiona Passantino’s talk on her comic book, ‘Handbook for Post-Covid Communication,’ challenges this notion by highlighting the power of visual communication. While comic sketches may initially seem lighthearted, Fiona demonstrates the effective marriage of text and image, supported by academic research.

Fiona discussed the ‘dual coding theory,’ explaining that humans process images faster than text, enhancing engagement in busy work environments. In our multicultural world, visuals can bridge language barriers, much like IKEA’s universal construction manuals. This approach ensures consistent communication across global audiences.

So, What Does Fiona Suggest?

Some audience members expressed concerns about integrating visual communication into Internal Comms, as comic sketches aren’t typical in business settings. However, Fiona encourages thinking outside the box and understanding your audience. Visuals can effectively convey less exciting topics, like new IT policies, to employees.

Consider incorporating photos, sketches, or short animations to diversify communication methods. With a younger workforce, including Gen Z recruits, it’s essential to adapt to their preferences. In a world saturated with text—emails, social media, and more—visual content can cut through the noise and enhance communication.
