Most Internal Comms Pros Looking for a New Job, Says VMA GROUP Survey

Nearly eight out of ten UK internal communications (IC) professionals are considering a job change within the next year as the economic climate improves. This insight comes from a survey conducted by recruitment firm VMA GROUP, which highlights the shifting landscape in the IC field.

Survey Insights and Economic Impact

The VMA GROUP survey, which included 500 IC professionals, revealed that 54% are actively seeking or planning to take a new job in the next 12 months, while 25% are potentially considering it. Nicole Dempster, internal comms director at ITV, noted that the improving economic conditions are prompting professionals to contemplate their next career moves. She expressed surprise at the high percentage of professionals planning to move, indicating a significant shift in the job market.

Despite the anticipated increase in demand for IC, with 87% of respondents expecting growth, only 20% foresee an increase in IC budgets. This discrepancy highlights a potential challenge for the industry. In the past year, 32% experienced a decline in their IC budget, while only 19% saw growth. However, there was positive news regarding team sizes, with 35% reporting growth in the past year and 26% expecting further expansion.

Internal Comms Strategy and Organizational Value

Interestingly, 36% of respondents indicated that their organizations lack a formal internal comms strategy, and 24% stated that any existing strategy is reviewed on an ad hoc basis. Drew McMillan, head of internal comms and innovation at Virgin Trains, expressed disappointment over this finding, suggesting that there might be a reluctance to embrace planning and governance within the IC function.

Additional findings from the survey include that 43% of respondents believe their comms directors value IC less than other functions like external comms, media, and public affairs. Furthermore, 46% reported to corporate comms departments, an increase from 38% the previous year. While 27% felt IC should report directly to the CEO or MD, only 12% currently do so. Additionally, 28% thought their MD or CEO did not value IC within their organization.

Training and Development

The survey also highlighted a gap in professional development, with 58% of respondents having undertaken no IC-related training in the past 12 months. This lack of training opportunities could impact the effectiveness and growth of IC professionals.
