The Great Resignation: Why a Quarter of UK Workers Are Planning a Job Change?
The Great Resignation, also known as the Big Quit, is an ongoing trend where employees are voluntarily leaving their jobs. This phenomenon has seen nearly two million UK adults resign since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. Research by Randstad UK reveals that 24% of workers are actively planning to change employment, driven by numerous vacancies and burnout. Additionally, almost 70% of workers feel confident about transitioning to a new role soon.
Understanding the Great Resignation
Typically, Randstad UK expects only up to 11% of workers to change jobs annually. However, the current situation is more pronounced in the US, where over 4.3 million Americans left their jobs in August 2021, marking 2.9% of the national workforce—the highest on record. New industry research from Unum indicates that SMEs are particularly vulnerable to losing talent due to a lack of focus on employee benefits and wellbeing, often constrained by budget or staffing concerns. Approximately one-third of SMEs have no plans to enhance their benefits packages, leaving them susceptible to disengaged employees.
Shifting Employee Priorities
Employees are now prioritizing work-life balance, flexibility, and passion for their roles over remuneration or bonuses. Many communications and marketing professionals are reflecting on their current and future opportunities, driven by changing working conditions and personal circumstances. This shift in priorities is significant.
The Impact of the Pandemic
Anthony Klotz, an associate professor of management at Mays Business School at Texas A&M University, coined the term Great Resignation and predicted the mass worker exodus. He notes that the phenomenon can lead to lasting change, with causes including burnout, dissatisfaction with pandemic responses, and signs of a stabilizing economy.
A Positive Sign of Progression
For many, the Big Quit is a positive progression. Communications and marketing professionals are prioritizing their wellbeing, making conscious choices to end toxic dynamics, and resigning for empowerment, ennui, or growth. However, it’s crucial to acknowledge those who quit due to untenable working conditions or childcare responsibilities, which tell a different story.
Benefits of Remote Work
The pandemic has introduced benefits like remote work, reducing commute time, enhancing flexibility, and allowing more time with family and friends. Employees emphasize these perks when considering new roles and are unlikely to relinquish them easily. Companies that fail to offer flexibility may see more resignations.
Business Adaptation and Employee Wellbeing
Businesses face a crossroads as they worry about losing top talent. This presents an opportunity to adapt and position themselves as employers who listen and support their staff, committing to a wellbeing strategy that benefits all employees. A happy and healthy workforce is productive, and flexible working and support benefit both individuals and business operations.
