The Launch of the NNC – Lost in Translation
The long-awaited launch event for the NNC Network, a community for non-native internal communications professionals, is now behind us. Hosted by VMA GROUP, the event titled “Lost in Translation” took place on June 21st. As a Modern Languages and Translation graduate, I was thrilled to collaborate with Coco Garcia Acevedo, a native Spaniard and internal communications professional, to establish this community. The evening was filled with lively discussions and a stunning view from Hanover Communications offices on Southwark Bridge.
What Did You Miss?
The event was designed as a ‘fireside chat’ where I interviewed Coco about her experiences as a non-native English speaker in internal communications. The discussion covered setbacks faced by non-natives, cultural differences in UK working culture, and advice for those early in their UK-based IC careers. The conversation resonated with many attendees, highlighting cultural differences in education value. One participant noted that in their native country, comms-specific academic achievement is often a prerequisite for employment, which contrasts with the UK market.
I also spoke with network members who haven’t faced setbacks as non-natives. While the chat with Coco might have been less relatable for them, they gained a greater understanding of others’ experiences.
But, What Was the Point?
Why create such a community? As a native English speaker who studied foreign languages and translation, I am familiar with the phrase ‘everyone speaks English’. While English is the language of the business world, it’s important to celebrate the assets that multilinguists bring. Knowledge of another language is more than words, and I want to advocate for multilingual talent in the Internal Comms market.
Hasta la Vista…?
With summer in full swing, we will host an informal meet and greet on August 17th (details TBC). This will be a great opportunity to continue conversations and welcome those who missed the launch. Moving into Autumn and next year, I have exciting ideas and welcome your thoughts. This network is a work-in-progress.
