We Don’t Mind The Gap!
On Tuesday 18th April, the Institute of Internal Communication (IoIC) hosted the “Don’t Mind the Gap” event, addressing career breaks and changes in direction. This gathering brought together internal communications talent, including members from VMA GROUP, to share stories and advice on navigating career transitions.
Insights from Industry Leaders
The event featured several professionals who have experienced career breaks or changes. David Cunningham, Communications Director at HSBC, discussed work policy regarding adoption leave. Neil Rodger, former Communications Lead at the Francis Crick Institute, shared his journey of founding Lifted Communications after a personal shift.
Other panelists included Lizzie Martin, who transitioned from a career at John Lewis to establishing her coaching business, Work Life Mother, for parent returners. Eleanor Tweddell shared her experience of taking voluntary redundancy from Vodafone and building a portfolio career, culminating in her book, “Why Losing Your Job (could be the best thing that ever happened to you).”
The Impact of Career Breaks
Moderated by Nicki Dyson, Group Head of Internal Communications and Engagement at Smart Pension, the event explored the emotions tied to employment gaps. It highlighted how these breaks can be both challenging and transformative, offering new career opportunities.
Whether returning to work as a new parent, after caring for a loved one, or navigating unexpected personal circumstances, the panel emphasized the importance of understanding personal values and goals. The discussion underscored the need to own one’s narrative and not feel victimized by career gaps.
