The NNC Meet Again...
We Meet Again…
17th August: the date rings a bell, right? Well, for any eagle-eyed comms professionals following VMA GROUP on LinkedIn, you will know the 17th of August was a big day for the non-native comms community! It was the 2nd event for the NNC Network.
The NNC Network
Having launched the NNC Network on the 21st of June with the opening event, Lost in Translation, The NNC Network is a newly-formed comms community of just over 70 non-native English speakers working in internal communications. Spanning 30 nationalities and over 30 languages, the NNC Network is undeniably a living example of cultural diversity.
FOMO? Fear No More!
Here’s What We Discussed…
After an introductory overview of the network, discussing upcoming ideas and sharing the progress so far, I interviewed my recent placement candidate, the Brazilian IC pro, Talita Abrantes, about her experiences breaking into the UK internal communications market.
As a then Head of Corporate Communications, Talita moved to the UK in 2021 in pursuit of her International Marketing Masters qualification at Kings College London, sponsored by a Brazilian Educational Organisation. Following her academic successes, Talita ended up staying in the UK and began her job search, as a seasoned internal comms professional. But, despite her wealth of experience gained in the Brazilian market, her job search journey wasn’t smooth sailing.
During the ‘fireside chat’ on Thursday evening, Talita highlighted the cultural differences in interview style, her self-consciousness stemming from her accent and the challenges of trying to explain Brazilian nationally renowned brands in a different country.
Hosted at Hanover Communications with incredible views over to St. Pauls Cathedral, the NNC members were invited to continue discussions over a drink and share their thoughts and ideas for the network in the NNC Post Box… and there was no silence to be heard! Once again, it was a delight to see the energy in the room; evidently, many discussions are yet to be shared amongst the non-native internal comms community.
The NNC Network Is Still Growing!
If you know of any non-native internal comms professionals keen to join this group, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Conversely, if you are a native English speaker, but wish to find out more, I’d love to hear from you.
The NNC Network will be meeting again on the 19th of October for a comms mash-up event with Crystle Pearce’s Meet the Author series – more information to come soon. Watch this space et à bientôt !
